New route provides direct access
MOTORISTS en route from Banora Point to Brisbane or Tweed Heads South got a pleasant surprise this morning when they found a new right turn from Darlington Dr onto the Pacific Hwy leading south, opened to traffic.
The new road resulted in a much faster trip for those drivers turning left onto the Pacific Hwy and gave motorists on their way from West Banora to East Banora, Terranora Rd and further south, a more direct route for the first time in many months.
Drivers will be able to use the Laura St and Terranora Rd intersections or continue along Sexton Hill Dr (old Pacific Hwy) to connect with the Pacific Hwy on their way south.
Transport Roads and Maritime Services promised a new northbound off-ramp, allowing motorist to exit the Pacific Hwy en route to Tweed Heads South, would be opened some time this week and should provide further relief to late and impatient drivers.
Northbound traffic will be able to continue along the Pacific Hwy over the viaduct bridge and exit at the new off-ramp, directly into Tweed Heads South via the Minjungbal Dr underpass.
With the opening of the right turn from Darlington Dr, the temporary link road from the eastern section of Darlington Dr to Laura St has been closed and traffic will have to use Sexton Hill Dr and the new Laura St intersection on their way to Banora East.
Traffic attempting to access Banora Point from Minjungbal Dr will have to deal with tailbacks for a while longer.
The closure of the eastern link road leading to Laura St has meant traffic continues to be backed up, at times, as far as the Shallow Bay Dr intersection.
