WIRE road dividers recently installed on Tweed Valley Way have been put to good use earlier this month.

A 100m section of a wire divider was damaged when a vehicle straddled the safety barrier only a day after it was installed.

Tweed Shire Council traffic engineer Ray Clark said the police advised him that it appeared a fatigued driver was the cause of the accident.

"We only had it up for a day," Mr Clark said.

"The barrier could have prevented a more serious head on collision."

Mr Clark said the barriers installed in Tweed Valley Way near Tumbulgum were part of a $2 million upgrade of the road as part of the Federal Government's Black Spot Program.

Black Spot projects target roads where crashes are occurring.

"We've had 16 crashes in the section in the past five years," Mr Clark said.

"The design also makes the road seem narrower so hopeful will make drivers slow down."

Mr Clark said that section of road would be resealed in the next few months to take advantage of better weather conditions for resealing.
