New dog hits the beat in Tweed

TWEED police have a new four-legged recruit.

A German Shepherd police dog started at the station after an intensive training program - for the handler.

State Protection Group dog handler Senior Constable Paul Barrenger has completed a four-month training course at Greendale, western Sydney.

The duties of the general purpose dog include criminal apprehension, tracking of missing people and offenders, searching of people and property, obedience and agility.

The general purpose dog will support and complement the existing drug detection dog.
