Netballers shoot for better salary

THE Australian Diamonds are shooting for a better pay day and have taken their fight for more money to Fair Work Australia.

Australia's top netballers receive $200 a day while on national duty, which includes training camps, meaning they pocket about $10,000 a year.

Now those in the world No.2 squad want to double that, arguing the demands on today's players are greater than ever.

The Diamonds conceded the top ranking to New Zealand after losing all three tests on last month's tour of England. It was their first series loss to the old enemy.

Netball Australia yesterday confirmed a claim had been lodged at Fair Work Australia by the AWU on behalf of the Australian Diamonds, saying the matter was under mediation.

Netball Australia chief executive Kate Palmer said although her organisation had a goal of the players becoming full-time professionals, she had to ensure the sport's financial viability.

"To provide them with what they currently want is just not possible. What they are asking for at the moment is not sustainable."
