SOUTH Grafton Public School managed to edge out Yamba Public 24-18 to claim the final of The Daily Examiner Netball Challenge yesterday.

Yamba, which was a dominant winner of the Lower Clarence heats, was gallant in defeat and made a late charge at the South Grafton girls but ran out of time.

South Grafton relied on its all-round sport skills to claim the final, after the majority of the girls represented their school in the PSSA cricket match the day before.

"They are a great bunch of girls to coach and both teams played with great skill and sportsmanship," South Grafton teacher Ainsley Pope said.

"We had some great support from the parents and other family members and we are hoping to build on this event for next year."

The Primary School division of the Daily Examiner Netball Challenge will join the senior schools finals night from next year.

If this year's final is anything to go by, it will provide a great entree to the high school matches.

South Grafton and Yamba met earlier in the year in their netball PSSA clash, with South Grafton narrowly prevailing on that occasion also.

"We knew it would be a tough match after we only just beat them in the PSSA match," Pope said.

"The girls played really well in the hot conditions today, but hopefully we can avoid that next year by playing earlier in the year on DEX Challenge night."

It is a busy period for the DEX sponsorship team, with the Daily Examiner Schools Touch Football competition being held in Yamba this afternoon.

The matches begin at 1.30pm at the Yamba Sporting complex and all games should be finished by 5.30pm.

Good luck to all the participating schools and kids. Have a great afternoon and buy Friday's paper for the full report.
