Mur'bah club wins grand final

MURWILLUMBAH Football Club completed the men's first division double by adding a grand final victory to the championship trophy in tossing Tweed United 1-0 at Carrara Stadium on Saturday night.

Star striker Brent Malone who came on in the second half as an impact player, did just that, slotting home the winning goal 10 minutes from full-time.

The goal, which was thumped home after a deflection by the United goalie, came as a great relief to the MFC players and supporters.

The champions had totally dominated the match but somehow were unable to beat the United goalkeeper until Malone's rocket-like goal broke the deadlock.

MFC missed a penalty, had several goals disallowed and on numerous occasions managed to hit the United woodwork.

It was a tremendous team effort by the winners who were well led by captain-coach David Lonie, Sam Reynolds, Dane Miller and Kurt Buchanan.

Reynolds was given the task of keeping quiet United's brilliant young striker, Alex Thelwall, and did the job to perfection.
