Mt Warning dragon boats looking for new enthusiasts

GRAB the kids and head to Condong this weekend to test out your paddling skills.

The Mt Warning Dragon Boat Club is hosting a come and try day for anyone who is keen and over eight years old.

Club member and paddler Donna Davies said the sport was not for the faint hearted.

"It's the hardest sport I've ever done in my life," the sporting guru said.

"People think you're just using your arms but it's a lot of core strength as well.

"It's also not a very natural thing, the movement; it's quite a difficult thing."

Mrs Davies said there were both mental and physical benefits to joining the club.

"There's definitely the team aspect," she said.

"But there's also the fitness side of things too."

The club is looking to recruit members who would like to compete at a competitive level.

Some of the club's boats can see up to 22 people in the one vessel.

Mrs Davies said anyone who is interested was welcome to turn up; basic instruction and technique will be taught as well as a short safety briefing.

The Mt Warning Dragon Boat Club has had a great year on the competitive front.

They went to Hong Kong a few months ago and returned with gold in their category.

"We're really hoping to get our numbers up so we can enter more competitions," Mrs Davies said.

If you are interested head out at 10am on Sunday to the 2nd boat ramp on McLeod St, Condong.

It costs $5 to cover insurance and if you choose to join it will be deducted from the membership fees.

Mrs Davies recommends wearing comfortable clothing and shoes, bring some water and make sure to slip slop slap.
