Movie review: Cloud Atlas

TO begin to describe the plot line of Cloud Atlas is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. I wouldn't even know where to begin.

Two words to sum up this science fiction fantasy film: too much.

The budget was too much, too many sub story lines within a bigger story line, too many characters, too many directors and too long.

It is a shame that this film was so disappointing given the amazing cast.

The likes of Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon and Hugh Grant help play out the adaptation of the novel by David Mitchell.

Mitchell's novel tells six somewhat interrelated stories in a variety of genres spread over a period of 5000 years from 1850 to the future in 2321.

It is not done chronologically and is a willy nilly mish mash of story lines which often are cut during pivotal moments.

I admire the directors for taking on the intricate and often confusing novel, but this one is just too big a project to execute well.

Don't get me wrong, the acting, sets, filming and costumes are amazing, but to be frank, the film is just plain boring.

The film looks at the underlying message of how actions and consequences on individual lives impact one another through past, present or future (or so Warner Bros Pictures tells me).

I enjoyed most of the individual story lines and several of which could become stand alone films.

But put together it just makes for three hours of confusion and pain for the audience.

There is not enough opportunity to get to know individual characters.

The best story line is that of the unscrupulous London publisher who is confined to a retirement home by his brother against his will.

He is cheeky and humorous and plots a plan with his chums to "break out" of their "prison".

The acting has to be applauded.

Each person plays several characters throughout the film-Tom Hanks a scheming doctor aboard a ship in the mid-nineteen century and a Hawaiian tribesman all in one breath.

Cloud Atlas has been well executed and is thrilling at times, but it is just a boring three hours that could be spent better elsewhere.
