A ROUGE moped rider was spotted slowing, and illegally, making her way north-bound up the Pacific Hwy at Tweed last week.

We captured the rider just after she poked across the Terranora Creek bridge.

NSW Traffic and Highway Patrol Command Inspector Phillip Brooks said motorists should give careful consideration to the route they are going to take before setting off on a trip, ensuring that the roads they travel along are suited to their vehicle both in terms of speed and terrain.

"If motorists do find their vehicle is unable to maintain a speed in accordance with the speed limit, they should stick to the far left lane of the road and allow other vehicles to safely pass," he said.

"Any motorist who sees a vehicle on the road which they suspect of being illegal or dangerous should call Triple Zero."

Our northern brothers have a similar rule with all mopeds, bikes, pedestrians and tractors prohibited on motorways and big highways.

Queensland Traffic and Highway Inspector Jeff Douglas said other vehicles were free to drive on any road, just not highways and motorways.

"In Queensland there are large signs before you enter a motorway saying what is prohibited," he said.

He suggested finding an alternative route and not a high speed corridor for slow vehicles.

Common courtesy is suggested to all road users when dealing with slow vehicles.

"Police would rather you arrive alive and perhaps a little late," he said.

"It comes down to behavioural mindset.

"The key is being courteous."

Both NSW and QLD police said if motorists are spotted using the highways in a dangerous manner 000 should be contacted.
