Mild weather ahead of new year

THE Northern Rivers can expect a fairly mild week of summer weather going into New Year's Eve, with no heavy rain or dangerous coastal conditions expected.

The patchy pre-Christmas cloud and scattered showers will ease slightly tomorrow, with a little more sunshine for beach-goers predicted over the coming days.

Temperatures will remain in the high 20s, warming on Saturday.

Isolated showers will persist right through the weekend and into New Year's Eve, along with lingering south-easterly winds, strength- ening over the weekend as a high moves into the Tasman.

The longer-term outlook hints at a tropical cyclone developing near New Caledonia at the weekend, which may affect our region by early next week. For surfers, this could be good news, with a north-easterly swell potentially making its way into the region by Tuesday.
