Mayor shares youthful wisdom
PROSPECTIVE councillors in the Tweed heard words of wisdom from the state's youngest mayor on Wednesday night.
The 28 year-old Gunnedah mayor spoke to them about the role of a councillor.
Cr Adam Marshall was first elected in March 2004 at the age of just 19 and became deputy mayor in 2007 at 22, then mayor the following year at 23, a position he has held ever since.
He is the chairman of the NSW Country Mayors Association and senior vice president of the Shires Association of NSW.
He is also the Chairman of Northern Inland Regional Waste (NIRW), a group comprising 13 Councils which specifically addresses waste management issues on a regional level.
Cr Marshall is Gunnedah Council's delegate to Namoi Councils, the Dorothea Mackellar Memorial Society, Public Libraries NSW - Country, Central Ranges Natural Gas Association and the Lake Keepit State Park Reserve Trust.
He is a member of the NSW Government's Land and Water Advisory Panel, Essential Energy's Regional Advisory Board and a member of the Gunnedah District Hospital Advisory Board.
"If you care about what happens in your Shire, want to work for economic growth and development, develop better and safer roads or support the growth of local business, then being a Councillor is for you," Cr Marshall told the candidates.
"Becoming a councillor is a great way to play a leading role in setting the future direction for Tweed Shire and making the important decisions that affect people's daily lives.
"It's a time consuming and sometimes very difficult role, but one that's extremely rewarding, satisfying and of critical importance."
