Martial arts master to compete in 100 consecutive rounds
A Tweed Heads man will be kicking his way into the record books with a world first attempt at completing 100 consecutive rounds of mixed martial art competitions to raise money for charity.
Owner and head instructor of the Tweed College of Martial Arts, Grant Ratcliffe, has set himself the gruelling challenge of completing, what is referred to in traditional Japanese martial arts, as 'The Hundred Man MMA Kumite'.
Mr Ratcliffe said this was a challenge that required great discipline, as it was both mentally and physically taxing.
"I will be facing off against professional mixed martial art practitioners with rounds including boxing, kickboxing, wrestling and submission grappling."
"The challenge will take five hours to complete, each round lasting two minutes with only a one-minute break between each until completion," he said.
"It's been a goal of mine for 20 years now and I am training for up to five hours a day in the lead up to the event.
"No martial artist has ever attempted this challenge in a mixed martial art format and only 17 people have ever completed the challenge in a Karate format."
Mr Ratcliffe said his efforts wouldn't be in vain
" I'm I am utilizing this huge test to raise $45,845 for the local Tweed Heads public hospital auxiliary.
After a personal experience that saw his son in the auxiliary ward at Tweed Heads hospital he was inspired to use his position to raise much needed funds.
"Its time we support our local hospital that supports so many of us and all the money will be used to upgrade and/or purchase new equipment," he said.
The event will take place on April 20.
