A BOAT overturned on the Tweed bar this morning throwing the sole occupant into the water.

A passer-by rescued the man from the water.

A Point Danger Marine Rescue spokesman said the incident occurred about 7am just before low tide when water was still running out of the river.

"The boat floated around from the bar across to Snapper Rocks, we tried to catch it with an anchor, but it's impossible to tow a boat that's turned over like that," the spokesman said.

The spokesman said a later search for the vessel was unsuccessful.
