Man steals mother's car then runs over grandmother

Alistair Brightman

DRAMA unfolded at a car park in Banora Point shopping centre when a mentally ill man stole his mother's car and ran down his grandmother.

On Saturday a 26-year-old Tweed man was waiting for his mother in her car while she picked up some take-away.

His grandmother got out of the car to have a cigarette while the driver's seat was empty and the key was still in the ignition.

"The mother looked out the window of the take away shop and saw her son was in the driver's seat," Tweed/Byron Local Area Command acting Inspector Saul Wiseman said.

"He reversed the vehicle with both doors open and one collided with the grandmother."

The woman suffered a laceration to the head and was transported to Tweed Hospital.

The man continued to drive away reversing out and hitting another parked car before making a run for it.

Police were contacted and intercepted the man on Kennedy Dr.

"Police struggled with the man," acting Insp Wiseman said.

The man was scheduled under the Mental Health Act and is in hospital.
