Man solves eclipse eyewear dilemma with six sunglasses

A SOLAR eclipse provided a striking show for interested locals out and about this morning.

My Daily News discovered Joe Murphy at Hooper Dr, Currumbin, using his own ingenious method to view the full brilliance of the event.

Mr Murphy combined six sunglasses to create an effective and impromptu viewing device that worked relatively well despite its strange looks.

Other locals would have had to view the eclipse through a pinhole projection or obtain a set of beefy and expensive safety goggles.

The eclipse first started at 5.45am in Cairns and the full eclipse occurred at 6.38am, lasting two minutes before vanishing from plain sight.

Google Maps showed exactly how long the eclipse would last in particular locations and was a useful tool for budding astronomers chasing a glimpse.

It will be three years before another solar eclipse is visible from Australia.
