A MAN is fighting for his life after being assaulted in Tweed Heads on the weekend and police are now appealing for witnesses.
The 42-year-old is in a critical and unstable condition at Gold Coast Hospital.
He had been driven to Tweed Hospital about 11am on Sunday by a man in a blue Holden Commodore.
He was unconscious and suffering serious head injuries.
The man was treated by hospital staff and transferred to Gold Coast Hospital.
Hospital staff alerted police to the incident and Tweed detectives are now investigating.
Police have established the man was assaulted at a house on Dry Dock Rd, Tweed Heads, on Sunday morning.
During the incident the man was allegedly punched to the head many times and fell to the ground where he was stomped on before a number of witnesses intervened.
As a result of police arrested a 36-year-old man on Sunday and charged him with grievous bodily harm with intent and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
He was refused bail to appear in Tweed Heads Local Court today.
Detectives are continuing investigations and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
They are particularly keen to hear from anyone who was near the house on Dry Dock Rd and heard or saw the assault.
