A MAN in the back of a police vehicle allegedly overdosed on prohibited drugs on Sunday.

The 27-year-old man remains alive, but he is in a serious condition at Tweed Hospital.

About 1.30am Sunday police stopped a car in Norman St, Tweed Heads and arrested the man.

He was put in the back of a caged truck for transportation to the police station.

On arrival police located a quantity of drugs in the rear of the caged truck. They believe the man may have consumed some of the drugs.

NSW Ambulance paramedics were called and assessed the man, but he remained at the station in police custody.

Some time later the officers again called paramedics who took the man to hospital.

"A critical incident team from the Richmond Local Area Commend will now investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident," a police statement said.
