AN enquiring mind and a love for the past saw Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar student Eden Tokatly win the Year 7 NSW 2012 National History Challenge.

The competition, organised and run by the History Teachers' Association of Australia, encourages students to use research and enquiry based learning to discover more about the past.

This annual research-based competition gives students a chance to be an historian, researching world history, examining Australia's past, investigating their community and exploring their own roots.

It emphasises and rewards quality research, the use of community resources and effective presentation.

Last Tuesday Eden attended a presentation ceremony in the Jubilee Room at Parliament House, Sydney, together with her family and her teacher, Jan Makepeace.

Eden was awarded a medallion and prize money for her essay written on the theme for 2012 "People and Consequences."

She analysed the impact of the artist Vincent van Gogh, who departed from painting realism, encouraging people's creativity in history.

"On behalf of the Lindisfarne Community we would like to congratulate Eden on an outstanding effort in this competition," a spokeswoman for the school said.
