Lifesavers busy as perfect conditions lure beachgoers
SURF lifesavers have their hands full on beaches around Byron Bay but on the Tweed beaches conditions are perfect for the holiday season.
NSW Surf Life Saving northern NSW coordinator Scott McCartney said it was busy on Tweed beaches with plenty of swimmers in the water but conditions were good.
"There has been different surf conditions on the Tweed compared to further south," Mr McCartney said.
"There are no banks off the main beaches and the swell hasn't been too bad."
Mr McCartney said water flowing off the banks near beaches caused the rips found around Byron Bay's beaches.
Surf Life Saving Queensland has reminded people to keep vigilant when entering the water.
"We realise that beaches may be crowded, but I urge all beachgoers to make the effort to swim between the red and yellow flags, even if it means walking a short distance to get there. The flagged areas are not only the safest spots to swim, but they are also patrolled by qualified surf lifesavers and lifeguards," SLSQ Gold Coast regional manager Eddie Bennet said.
"At the end of the day, we want swimmers to enjoy the beach this Christmas and have a holiday they will remember for all the right reasons. We don't want a situation where one moment of madness results in tragedy."
