Levees protecting towns hold as flood waters rise and fall
THE levees protecting Clarence Valley population centres are in remarkably good shape considering the battering they have taken in the past month.
Clarence Valley Council deputy general manager Des Schroder said the council's engineering staff had been working around the clock over the weekend to ensure the region's flood protection systems were working as well as possible.
"Most of the levees are standing up fairly well," he said.
"There's been some slumping in the Alipou Creek wall, but you would expect that with the amount of rain we've have," he said.
"There's also been problems with river bank slumping outside the levee system."
Mr Schroder said the council had prioritised flood protection work since Friday.
"Everything else stops until the flood emergency is over," he said.
"We've stopped non-urgent work like repairs to the ramp at the sailing club, because it's likely to be damaged again anyway."
