HOME-grown star Laura Geitz will lead the Queensland Firebirds in next year's Trans-Tasman Championship after being named captain.

The outstanding defender follows in the footsteps of Lauren Nourse who retired at the end of last season.

The 25-year-old, who made her debut for the Australian Diamonds in 2008, said she was thrilled to be offered the role and was looking forward to having the chance to lead the team to its second ANZ Championship.

"Being handed the captaincy is a huge honour and privilege," Gietz said.

"Winning in 2011 was a major achievement and I'm determined to repeat that success with our current crop of talented players."

As well as winning the title, Gietz was also a member of the Australian world-championship winning team in 2011.

Last season's Firebirds player of the year Natalie Medhurst has been promoted from the leadership group to vice-captain.

The Firebirds open their campaign against the Southern Steel at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on March 24.
