Labor Party starts new day branch at Banora Point
A NEW Australian Labor Party branch has been born in Banora Point with Tweed Shire Council's deputy mayor Michael Armstrong taking the interim president spot and former ALP state candidate Reece Byrnes becoming interim branch secretary.
Local ALP leading light, Federal member for Richmond Justine Elliot, was on hand to celebrate the birth of the branch.
"During the door-knocking campaign of the recent council elections, many Banora Point residents said they were interested in creating a local ALP branch.
"People were especially keen to establish a day branch which would allow members to attend meetings during the day rather than at night.
"Many residents voiced concerns about the cuts in spending by the coalition governments in NSW and Queensland and wanted to see the opinions of Banora Point residents represented," Mrs Elliot said.
With a large number of young families in the area, the cuts to education funding were a real worry for the residents of Banora.
Every single school was affected and critical of the measures taken by the coalition governments, Mrs Elliot said.
The new Banora branch still had to undergo a proper process involving the ALP's administrative committee but this was nothing more than a formality.
Branch secretary Reece Byrnes said once the branch had met on a few more occasions, it would formulate the issues to be addressed and the goals it would seek to achieve.
