A MAN is recovering in hospital after surgery overnight to remove a knife embedded in his head just behind the eyeball.

The blade penetrated nearly halfway through the 20-year-old Christchurch man's head.

Police said he had been in his own home when a house party turned violent early yesterday morning.

He was stabbed just behind the eye with a 90mm knife.

This morning a spokeswoman for the Canterbury District Health Board said the man was in a stable condition in a ward at Christchurch Hospital.

Police said the stabbing happened in Flockton St, St Albans, about 1am.

The alleged attacker, also 20, appeared in the Christchurch District Court yesterday on charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

A police officer who was one of the first to arrive at the scene had emergency medical experience and decided to leave the knife undisturbed before the man was taken to hospital for surgery.
