A MAN from Kingscliff and another from Currumbin are recovering in hospital today following a machinery collapse.

The pair were in a serious but stable condition last night at Lismore Hospital following the incident outside Officeworks in Lismore.

It's understood the men, both aged 42, were hanging a large Officeworks sign about 6m off the ground, at 6pm.

The elevated platform, also known as a cherry picker had been parked over a steel grate which could not cope with the weight of the vehicle.

One of the platform's wheels fell through the grate, causing the crane to fall backwards on to Molesworth St.

Richmond Local Area Command supervisor Sergeant Brad Walpole said one of the victims had sustained head injuries and had undergone a CAT scan.

The man was to be held overnight but expected make a full recovery by this morning, while the second victim received facial injuries and was expected to be released.

Telecommunications wiring housed beneath the grate was severely damaged in the accident.

WorkCover NSW has commenced an investigation into the matter.
