KFC Byron battlelines drawn

A NORTHERN Rivers couple are pushing ahead with their plans to open a KFC outlet in Byron Bay despite being told by Byron Shire Council that it would place the town's $400 million tourism industry in jeopardy.

At a recent meeting with Mayor Simon Richardson, Crs Rose Wanchap and Chris Cubis, and Byron United president, Paul Waters, the couple revealed they had already signed a 10-year lease on a store in the Byron Plaza vacated earlier this year by Byron Music behind Palace Cinemas.

Cr Richardson said he was blunt with the couple telling them that council and local businesses did not want them to move into town.

But they said they expected to lodge a DA within two weeks.

Meanwhile on Monday, Cr Richardson and local youth worker Nicqui Yazdi launched a new Facebook page to campaign against KFC.

"KFC could only lead to further destruction of Byron, leading to obesity, ill-health and increased rubbish," Ms Yazdi said.
