JAPANESE students have embraced everything the Tweed has to offer during a six-day exchange program.

Banora Point High School students hosted 38 eager students from Nagasaki last week.

Student council member Jay Rickard said the students' eyes were opened to many Australian traditions including kangaroo burgers, folk dancing and of course lamingtons.

"It's the first time we've hosted students from Japan and it's been really fun," he said.

Japanese teacher Sheridan Hargreaves said the school only started their Japanese language program this year.

"It's been a fabulous opportunity for all of our students," she said.

"At first they were all a bit unsure but now the students are all here; they're having a great time.

"They've made many international friendships."

Nagasaki student Satoko Hanaki said she was already in love with Australia.

"It's so beautiful and the people are so friendly," she said.

Next year Banora Point High plan to send students to the school in Nagasaki.

Every second year the school will host another group of Japanese students.

As recognition of their friendship Year 7 students designed a friendship garden where the Japanese students can plant a tree when they visit Australia.
