A GIANT human pink ribbon was made at Geoff Watt Oval this morning, in a Cancer Council event designed to raise awareness of Breast Cancer.

Community Relations Councilor of the Cancer Council, Emily Pettitt, said it was fantastic to see both women and men turn out for the event, standing together to form the international symbol of support.

Ms Pettitt said they had hoped for at least 39 women in attendance at the 10am event - to represent the number of women in the region who pass away due to breast cancer each year - a number they surpassed.

Chances are that most of us will know someone who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, or be touched by the disease in some way, Ms Pettitt said.

Robyn Sparks was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005, and this morning she stood proud in pink.

She said that regular breast screenings were so important, because early detection is the "key tool" for women in the fight against breast cancer.

Both Ms Pettitt and Ms Sparks were very happy with the number of people who turned out to raise awareness and draw attention to the cause.

There will be events through October, a month internationally recognized as a month of Breast Cancer Awareness, from various groups.

On Friday October 19th, the Cancer Council will have 25 stall sites around the region selling fundraising merchandise for Pink Ribbon Day.
