A HERVEY Bay hoon who went around doing early-morning burnouts and doughnuts left a vital piece of evidence at the scene: his hubcap.

Unlicensed driver Cameron Kirk Kissack was dobbed in to police after he was seen hooning around Torbanlea about 3am on June 2.

When police caught up with the 18-year-old, he told them he didn't even remember driving that morning because he'd been drinking and taking Valium.

A witness told police he'd seen a car driving "erratically" around Eglington St, spinning its wheels and circling around the roadway.

The vehicle then crashed into a gutter and drove over a grass verge.

Kissack's hubcap remained in the gutter when police arrived at the scene later that day to investigate.

They took photos of skid marks on the road and the grassed area.

They also photographed the incriminating hubcap, which they soon matched with Kissack's vehicle parked in a nearby driveway.

Hervey Bay Magistrate Tom Killeen told the teenager the community would not stand for hooning.

"Obviously your driving on this occasion is unacceptable to the community and the courts," Mr Killeen said.

The court heard that Kissack's mother initially tried to take the blame for her son on the use of the car, but later confessed it was he who was driving.

When Kissack, a Pialba resident, was questioned, he also at first denied doing the burnouts.

But he later told police he couldn't remember driving that night because he'd been drinking alcohol and was on prescribed valium.

He said he was not game enough to walk down Eglington St because he was scared of seeing what he'd done.

"I'll never do any childish behaviour like that again," Kissack said in court.

He was fined $750 for driving without due care and unlicensed driving.

He was also disqualified from driving for six months.
