A HOMELESS person is now without his only means of shelter after his ute was engulfed by flames.

The vehicle was in Goodwin Park, Coolangatta when it was set alight.

A picture of the vehicle was posted on the Tweed Heads Facebook page by a Kingscliff teen on Saturday night.

Tweed/Byron Local Area Command acting Inspector Jason Dowds said after some investigation police found the car was registered to a Banora Point home.

However the owner never reported the car stolen.

Coolangatta Police Senior Constable Julie Glaister said police found the car about 10.30pm on Saturday.

She said a homeless man owned the car.

"He wasn't in the vehicle at the time," she said.

"We have no suspects at this stage."

It is the second time in as many days that a burnt out car was discovered in the area.
