A 21-YEAR-OLD Yamba woman was assaulted in her own home early today by an Aboriginal man who remains at large.

The woman received hospital treatment for her head injuries.

Grafton duty officer Inspector Tony Milner has called on the public to help identify the man whom he described as 170cm tall, of medium build, aged in his late 20s and wearing a black hooded jumper at the time.

Insp Milner said the man entered the High St, Yamba home about 2am and immediately assaulted the woman.

"A violent struggle took place until the woman was able to leave," he said.

Neighbours, he said, heard the screaming and became involved but the offender managed to leave the house through the back door.

Police searched the neighbouring streets but were unable to find the man.

No further details about the assault were able to be published.

Anyone with information about the man or the assault should call CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000 or contact Yamba or Grafton police.
