'Old world' property pays homage to gentler times
THE OWNER of Loot Homewares in Lismore, Hollie Butlin has - as you would expect - a dramatic home with many design elements.
"When we built the house we wanted the old world feeling," said Hollie.
"We also wanted something big and grand. Its six bedrooms, but we love to entertain. I designed it myself as I wanted it to resemble my grandmother's style.
"I had studied Interior Design and I got very interested in the psychology of interior design. I wanted to recreate my grandmother's house because for me, it was an emotionally supportive," explains Hollie.
"The last time I was in her house I was four; it was a big house on the harbour in Sydney. I remember it was featured in House & Garden magazine in 1973 , which I have.
"My parents divorced when I was young. As children we went to our grandmother who was very warm and loving and it was those feelings I wanted to capture. I do things on a grand scale which is also what my grandmother did."
"The garden is as important to me as the house. And again, the design aspect of the garden, I associate with my grandmother. We're on a 43 hectares here and I love the view," she said.
"We spend most of our time in the family room, especially in winter around the fireplace. Apart from that I'm either in the kitchen or the garden.
"The dining room is probably most like my grandmothers. We love to have Christmas dinners and birthday celebrations in this room and get all the best china and cutlery out.
"I play the piano a little, but my daughter plays the piano very well. We have speakers throughout the house and into the garden and when I'm home alone I play classical music very loud!
"The house is beautiful; it's always a pleasure to be here."
