Hoarse MP announces rent hike

IF SHE had hoped to break the bad news about the looming public housing rent rise gently, NSW Community Services Minister Pru Goward failed.

When questioned in NSW Parliament on Thursday about the impact the carbon tax would have on public housing, Ms Goward's chose to answer by screeching.

Like a riled up commentator in the heat of a close sporting match, Ms Goward rattled off the list of problems she accused Labor of leaving behind last year including a waiting list of 56,000 people.

She said the Federal Governmet's carbon tax would affect the price of "every nail, every pot of paint and every killowatt of electricity" put into social housing.

Her voice only escalated when some MP's began to yell back.

By the time she got around to announcing the state government would increase social housing rents to combat the problem, Ms Goward was hoarse.

Pointing her finger at those opposite she yelled "Our decision about the treatment of the carbon tax is not easy but it is the right decision for the many people living in houses most opposite would feel were considerably beneath them".

Theatrics aside, Ms Goward did manage to give a basic overview of who will be affected and when.

As of next year, everyone in social housing with face a rent rise of between $1.50 to $2 per week.

Ms Goward said the tax would cause social housing costs to rise by about 1.7% and the only alternative to a small rent rise was longer waiting lists.
