Hemp embassy hails inquiry

NIMBIN's Hemp Embassy is applauding the decision to hold a New South Wales Upper House inquiry into the medical use of marijuana.

The committee, chaired by Sarah Mitchell MLC, of The Nationals, includes representatives of the Australian Labor Party, the Greens and the Liberal Party.

Mrs Mitchell said the committee would examine the "safety and efficacy" of cannabis for medical purposes, as well as consider if and how cannabis should be supplied for medical use.

"In addition, the inquiry will investigate the legal implications of cannabis use for medical purposes, as well as any other related issues," she said.

Labor's leader in the NSW Upper House, Luke Foley, moved the motion to set up the inquiry.

The Hemp Embassy's vice-president, Max Stone, said the organisation was "delighted".

"We have been pushing really hard for this issue," Mr Stone said. "The only reason they are talking about this in Parliament is because of all our years of activism."

Asked about the correct model to run a medicinal cannabis service, Mr Stone said the Government would be getting revenue from both the wholesale buying and the retail sale of the medicinal cannabis.

"We would have a registrar, in which you would be a registered grower of medical grade cannabis," he said.

"We would pay you through your EFTPOS account."
