Help wanted to fill tummies and feed need for contact
KINGSCLIFF Meals on Wheels subsidiary is seeking more volunteers to help provide the elderly with social contact.
The Social Support Program runs events about twice a month and rely on volunteers to pick up clients, and to organise the day.
Manager Christopher Watt said more volunteers are needed in the new year when they hope to expand the program by offering more events.
"Social Support is where the growth is and volunteers are a really important part of what we do."
"We're always looking for volunteers because we couldn't do it without them," he said.
Mr Watt said it was important for the elderly to have social contact.
"It's one thing to do the meals, but you have to keep them social as well otherwise they become isolated."
Client Elspeth Vernon said Meals on Wheels was a wonderful organisation.
"I have never in my life seen anything like it," she said.
"I appreciate what they do for the elderly and I can't commend them enough."
Mrs Vernon said the younger generation should also get involved.
"I feel the young ones could spare a couple of hours," she said.
Long time volunteer Lyn Johnston joined the organisation to help others, and herself.
"I needed to be needed," she said.
The program currently has about 10 volunteers who provide help and support to about 30 clients.
