RAINFALL has been heavy in Tweed this morning and it's expected to continue over the weekend.

Coolangatta topped the charts with a significant 56mm of rain blanketing the town in the last 24 hours, and an extra 14mm falling from 9am this morning.

This has led to diversions at the Gold Coast Airport, with at least three flights denied landing access due to the bad weather.

Boats are also having extra trouble crossing the Tweed Heads bar due to low visibility, and it is highly recommended to avoid crossing if possible.

Drivers are encouraged to drive to conditions and be patient to avoid a repeat of the tragic accidents which brought the area to a standstill last week.

Bureau of Meteorology weather observer Wayne Watson said the showers were mostly coastal and the southernmost parts of the Tweed had avoided much of the downpour.

"We haven't had anything much here, it's all coastal based," he said.

There's a chance Tweed could be hit by a storm on Saturday, with rain and cloudy conditions forecast until at least Thursday.

Website Willyweather collates data supplied by the BOM, and states that the Tweed Cobaki Broadwater is the wettest area in the state as of 9am this morning.
