HE may only weigh a little more than two kilograms at the moment, but the latest addition to the Darling Downs Zoo family has quite a bit of growing to do yet.

Kwanza the little white lion cub was born on November 12 and will grow to be more than 220kg.

His name translates to "first" in Swahili, an apt name considering he is the first white lion cub to be born at a Queensland zoo.

Kwanza was born to parents Shaka and Shenzi who were imported from South Africa in 2010.

Darling Downs Zoo manager Steve Robinson said Kwanza was only the second white lion to be bred in a zoo in Australia.

The breeding of white lions in captivity is considered a crucial part of the rehabilitation of the species which no longer exist in the wild.

Kwanza is the fifth lion cub born at the zoo in just over 12 months, with four tawny lion cubs born last October.

Kwanza will not go on show to the public until December.
