Hayley’s Great Shave for dad
BE BRAVE and shave is the catchcry for the World's Greatest Shave - and Hayley Pender, of Ballina, is being braver than many.
The 11-year-old will be shaving her head in the fundraiser in memory of her dad, Lee Pender, who passed away from sarcoma in October last year, aged 54.
Hayley said her friends didn't want her to lose her blonde locks - but she is going ahead with the shave.
Hayley's mum, Kim Walkington, said Hayley's involvement in Girl Guides had given her a sense of community - she has twice given up birthday presents to raise money to help an orphanage in Africa.
Kim said her late partner had similar values.
"He was always helping someone," she said. "He would be very proud of Hayley."
Initially, they set a fundraising target for the shave.
But the Facebook posts about the event created plenty of interest in the shave, and $750 has been raised to date. So the target has been increased to $1000.
Leigh, from Tonic, will shave Hayley's hair at the Ballina Girl Guides hall in Swift St on March 13, from 5.30pm.
Kids can get their hair coloured for $2 at the public event, and there will be other activities, too.
