Gwydir Hwy closed as backburning starts

THE Little Gundah fire near Jackadgery is burning towards the south and approaching the Gwydir Highway. Back burning is about to commence from the Gwydir Highway near the Sugarloaf Bell Bird area. Fire crews with fire tankers will be working from the Gwydir Highway along a section of winding and steep road.  There will be active fire alongside the highway and a substantial amount of smoke will be generated.
RTA have activated warning signs at Swan creek and Six Mile Creek. The Gwydir Highway may be cut  for some time.

Advice
Drivers are urged to show caution and obey all traffic control measures. Headlights should be turned on for maximum visibility if driving through smoke

If you need to report a new fire or require urgent assistance, dial Triple Zero (000).
