Great white shark may have attacked dolphin
THE savaged body of a dolphin washed up on Main Beach, Byron Bay, last weekend had clear bite marks consistent with a great white shark.
Expert advice from a NSW Department of Primary Industries shark researcher said the tooth spacing was consistent with a small great white shark.
However, it was unclear whether the attack took place while the dolphin was still alive.
The dolphin washed ashore on the same weekend a 2.5 to 3m shark approached a group of 15 surfers at The Pass, on Saturday.
The shark swam into the middle of the surfers and began thrashing about. The water was cleared but some surfers returned just 15 minutes later.
Other recent incidents have included a shark turning very close to surfers and flicking its tail.
Surfers believe it is the same shark and it is growing bolder with its behaviour becoming increasingly territorial.
