Goldie plan is a stupid idea
HAS anyone been following the ongoing saga of the Gold Coast cruise ship terminal?
The proposal is to build a monstrous development to dock cruise ships at either Tugun or the Broadwater spit.
This is a bizarre idea. It ignores the damage and erosion such a development would cause. It also fails to calculate the ongoing costs of maintenance dredging that would be required to keep it operational.
Any surfers worth their salt would be thinking: what about the waves, what about the very asset that made that region what it is? Not to mention what happens when a category five cyclone spins down from the Coral Sea?
We might say: hey, that's the Gold Coast for you; they're kind of special up there. Nothing like that could ever happen here. But let's not forget that stupidity is usually contagious. If it goes ahead, others may be inspired to try something equally inappropriate here.
It wasn't that many years ago, a group of developers put forth the idea of building a massive marina at The Pass.
My point is, folks, if you're a surfer, a boatie, fisho or just someone who loves our beaches, keep up to date on what's proposed for your coastline.
Have your say wherever you can and be heard before it's too late to take action.
The developers rarely care about our beloved beaches. This has been proven time and time again: the money comes first and then the councils and the ratepayers are left to clean up (and pay for) the aftermath.
So, be informed and keep ahead of the game to keep our waves. Remember to have fun, wait your turn and surf today like you want to surf again tomorrow.
