Four-storey Bangalow DA rattles heritage town
BYRON Shire Council has extended the public submissions deadline on a proposed four-storey $3.5 million Bangalow development amid concerns that it was completely out of keeping with the the town's heritage character.
The deadline has been extended from December 24 to January 7 for feedback on a block of eight residential apartments with three ground floor shops and an 18-car basement level planned for 9 Station St.
But Bangalow Progress Association president Tony Hart said the extension should be till the end of January so the town had time to organise public meetings against what was perhaps the largest development ever proposed for the town's CBD.
Mr Hart said if approved, Station St "will become a canyon of four storey buildings totally out of character with Bangalow's main street and totally at variance with Bangalow's heritage character".
Resident Sue Franklin said the development was huge and would set a new precedent as there were plans for another major development across the road.
"The development will be accessed by a laneway that runs by the school.
Both the school and the P&C have serious safety concerns for the children using this laneway to get to school," Ms Franklin said.
