A FUNERAL will be held next week for former Ballina Shire councillor John Felsch, who died from cancer on Saturday, aged 75.

He was renowned for his long-term involvement in local government.

In total, Mr Felsch served 32 years on the Ballina council, and was involved in the local sugar cane industry for decades.

He was also well known for his hire car business, having started off in Sydney with famous clients such as Dolly Parton and Stevie Nicks.

Mr Felsch is survived by his three children, David, Roslyn and Adrian, and his partner Therese.

Current Ballina mayor David Wright said Mr Felsch would be missed in the local community.

"He was very passionate, particularly if there was a cause he believed in," he said.

Mr Felsch's funeral will be held at St Mary's Anglican Church on the corner of Norton and Burnet Sts, Ballina, on Monday, March 4, from 10.30am.
