Fish farming could harm shark nursery: Cate Faehrmann

"CONFLICTS" between great white sharks and humans will likely increase if the NSW Government goes ahead with its plans to build a fish farm on the state's Mid North Coast, says Greens MP Cate Faehrmann.

An area off Port Stephens has been ear-marked for a five-year study on the viability of off-shore fish farming.

The State Government has so far refused to seek federal approval for the farm, which Ms Faehrmann believes could harm a nearby shark nursery and attract predators to swimming areas.

According to the Herald, the federal department of environment wrote to the state department last week reminding it of its "obligations under national environmental law" to seek approval for projects which were likely to impact threatened species.
