Firies pump peddles to raise cash for cancer
A GROUP of nine Tasmanian fire-fighters cycled through the Northern Rivers today as part of an epic 2,600km bike ride from Brisbane to Hobart.
The group, which has a support crew of six in three vehicles along with a police escort, was on day two of their fortnight journey to raise money for cancer research.
They arrived in Byron Bay late Tuesday afternoon and hit Lismore yesterday morning before moving on to Grafton.
The group departed Brisbane City Fire Station at 5.30am on New Years Day and are scheduled to arrive in Hobart on January 14.
The epic journey is to raise $100,000 for cancer research with $40,000 already in the kitty.
Emma Weitnauer, one of the organisers and a ride participant, said many of the fire fighters at her station were keen cyclists.
But it was the death of two workmates from cancer in the last month that also provided added inspiration for the marathon ride which had been one year in the organising.
