Fireworks back for Aust Day

THERE will be fireworks again in Ballina this Australia Day, January 26.

The Ballina RSL Club is putting on the display, to be held in the Richmond River opposite the club at about 9pm on our national day.

It has been a few years since there have been fireworks in Ballina on Australia Day.

General manager of the club, Bill Coulter, said the fireworks were the club's way of marking the national day in a way the Ballina community can enjoy.

"And there'll be no better spot to see it than inside the club," he said.

Mr Coulter said the fireworks hadn't been held other years as Australia Day fell on a weekday, and many people had to go to work the next day.

But Australia Day will be on Saturday this year, with the public holiday on Monday, January 28.

The fireworks are just a part of the club's Australia Day activities.

From 10am, registration can be made for the kids' fishing competition. All entrants receive a free Shimano show bag, and prizes are on offer.

The Silly Billies are performing live from 10.30am-11.30.

There will be a free kids sausage sizzle followed by face painting and balloon twisting from 12pm.

Following the fireworks at 9.15pm, Lisa Hunt and Band will perform.
