IT took a dozen firefighters to calm a grass fire that broke out in the dunes of Cabarita Beach this afternoon.

Group Captain of NSW Rural Fire Service Mark Eglington and his team got the call at 2.20pm from a 000 emergency call.

Capt Eglington said he does not know the cause of the fire at this stage as it was still under investigation.

"It's only getting worse with no rain and all the wind we've had," Capt Eglington said.

"You know someone has done the wrong thing here, you can see a little camp fire down there but that didn't start the fire as it's too far away," he said.

"Today we have to do a total blackout, which means we make sure nothing is left smouldering and make sure we get the job done properly."

Cabarita residents Paul and Gwen Cafarella said last year was quite bad with fires in the area.

"When we see and smell the fires we don't know if it's a burn-off, controlled or something serious," Mr Cafarella said.

Resident Lily Crockett noticed the smoke as it formed a corona around the sun.

"I stood up on the roof of my apartment to get a better look," Ms Crockett said.

Another concerned resident was worried about the wallabies and their habitat where the fire broke out.

Capt Englington said they often get dune fires at this time of the year, with an average of one to two fires per week.

The fire will be reported to the police, further investigation will be taken if similar situations keep occurring.
