Fines issued: NSW 168 Qld 0

TWEED Shire Council handed out 168 parking fines across the shire during Cooly Rocks On, while across the border, Gold Coast City Council issued none.

The border contradiction is not as severe as last year, with 300 tickets issued by Tweed Shire Council during the Queen's Birthday long weekend last year while Gold Coast City Council again issued none.

The discrepancy caused uproar last year with festival-goers furious that the Tweed Shire Council wouldn't make an exception and waive the fees during the festival.

A Tweed Shire Council spokesman said this year's lower figure could only be attributed to more people abiding by the rules.

"We would put the decrease down to increased awareness following the high profile of last year's campaign as our staff levels were the same for both years," he said.

A spokeswoman for Gold Coast City Council said infringements were usually only made in response to complaints, and none were lodged with the council during the festival.
