Film fest in the bin this year
CURRUMBIN-based short film festival In The Bin has been cancelled due to a mixture of insufficient funding and an overload of entries.
The Australia-wide touring festival was set to arrive in town this coming weekend, but the date has been pushed back to January 2013 until the festival can get back on its feet.
Even with a staggering 300 entries for the celebration of short film, In the Bin festival director Jed Cahill said they just didn't have the budget to go through with the festival this September.
"Originally, before we acknowledged the reality of our budget, we were going to cancel the festival due to the low quality films we were receiving and then suddenly we had this abundance of films to choose from," Mr Cahill said.
In The Bin short film festival, created in 1999 by Mr Cahill, provides a platform for professional and developing film makers to showcase their skills.
The touring festival added an education program to their enterprise in 2003 that included a three-day workshop to teach students, teachers and community groups the ropes on how to make a short film.
Despite the cancellation, Mr Cahill described the increase of entries as simply bizarre.
"We have an awesome selection for 2013 but only the best will make it through to screening," Mr Cahill said.
The 2013 festival will be held at Currumbin Parklands with entry priced at $10 for adults and children.
