TWEED Mayor Barry Longland has expressed his disappointment at hearing the Murwillumbah Bowls Club will officially close next month after 91 years.

The decision by the Murwillumbah Services Club to close the financially-strapped club on June 30 after taking over less than two years ago has saddened club members and the community.

"I was really distressed to hear that the services club's attempt to revitalise the club has failed," Councillor Longland said.

"They still have some time but it doesn't seem positive.

"It's been around for a long time and has a lot of history so it's very sad."

Cr Longland said he believed the only way the club could have survived was by re-opening the dining area and making it friendlier for families and young people.

"They needed to revitalise the club for the younger members and open the dining area but that doesn't seem to have happened."

He said the services club had spent $500,000 on improvements and repairs but could not stop the continued loss in revenue.

"We want the people of the Tweed to know we've done everything we could," said Bowls Club president, Lex Fletcher.

"The services club offered it back twice and while there was no exact figure named, the estimated figure was out of reach."

The 60th anniversary of the Women's Bowling Club will go ahead at the bowls club on May 30.
