SIXTY extra police will be rostered on for the Australia Day long weekend in the Tweed area command.

Tweed Police Inspector Jason Dowds said Australia Day would be resourced to the same level as New Year's Eve.

"We have extra (staff) on the roster and there is no annual leave at this time," Insp Dowds said.

He said police on leave were required to come back for the Australia Day weekend.

Police had help from the heavens last year with widespread rain cancelling many of the events on the Tweed.

According to police, there were 17 arrested across the shire during last year's celebration.

Most were arrested for traffic offences but four people were arrested for assault.
